“Is there a battery in your mouth?” asks Dr. Mike in one of the all-time most popular posts on this blog.
That’s a strange question to ask or is it? Did you know that most metals found in your mouth have the ability to create an electrical charge? This charge can be responsible for numerous side effects that are rarely associated with the dental work found in your mouth.
Though this isn’t new knowledge, it’s often overlooked, despite the fact that it can trigger or aggravate both oral and systemic health issues. It’s one of the reasons why we’ve not used dental metals in our practice for many years, choosing biocompatible alternatives such as zirconia and other ceramics, and composite resins.
Both are more aesthetic choices, as well.
The video below takes a deeper dive into the matter of oral galvanism and its potential effects on mouth/body health – including an eye-opening presentation of case histories by podiatrist and surgeon Dr. Scott Schroeder. He shows how even metals that are far apart in the body can generate ill effects – and how removing the metal can be an important step in the resolution of symptoms.
